Fresh spices, straight from Patonda since 1997

Rajendra Motilal Bora (Bori Seth), founder, in a spice shop

Our story · Since 1997

It started in a grocery shop.

Rajendra Motilal Bora, known to everyone as Bori Seth and to the family as Dadaji, ran a grocery shop with his wife Chandrakala. In 1997 they began making their own masala at home: just haldi and chilli.

They had watched big brands sell low quality at high margins. Their answer was simple: grind it clean, grind it honest, and let the taste do the selling. This is how it grew.

Run today by the family: Manoj and Jaya Pokharna, Anand and Yogita Bora.

In his words

Quality and a clean method should never be replaced. If quality is good, the customer will pay for quality. It’s all about people’s health.

How it grew

From a home kitchen to our own factory.

  1. An old Indian masala shop counter with sacks of chilli and haldi and a brass scale

    1997

    It began at the shop

Dadaji and Chandrakala ji ran a grocery shop. They saw big brands selling low quality at high margins, so they started making their own at home: only haldi and chilli.

  2. A close-up of fresh haldi and whole garam masala spices in brass plates

    Then

    The first masalas

Turmeric and garam masala came first. About five years of struggle followed before the business grew.

  3. M.D. Chicken Masala pack in a kitchen with bowls of masala

    Growth

    Chicken masala takes off

Homes loved our chicken masala. It became about half of our success, and we moved to a big factory.

  4. Cartons of M.D. masala packed and stacked for a big order

    2005

    Our first big order

300 bags, about 7,500 kg of masala in one order.

  5. M.D. turmeric, chilli and coriander packs in a busy kitchen

    2017

    ₹1 crore in a year

Our first year above ₹1 crore in sales.

  6. Our masala factory floor with grinding machines, spice sacks and powders

    Today

    7 tonnes a day

Made in our own factory at Patonda. Dadaji still comes to the factory.

The family

Still a family business.

Dadaji and Chandrakala ji started it. Their children and their families run it with them today.
